Peterborough Winners
The PTBC Tour's second tour stop of 2012 visited a new host for the club, AMF Peterborough on Sunday 1st April.
The only optional prize fund tenpin event anywhere saw just shy of 60 players bowl into the cathedral city of Peterborough which is around 85 miles north of London, nestling in the county of Cambridgeshire.

Expert lanesman Ross Gibson was tasked with laying the WTBA Montreal lane pattern on the centres 20 AMF SPL lanes, and it was to nobodies surprise that Ross (Bowltech UK's Technical Manager) did a perfect job.

The medium length championship pattern gave most of the bowlers a bit of a test, all of which knew it was about learning to play on this style of pattern rather than putting blame to equipment, weather, or some other such reason.

The optional prize fund attracted around 25 entries at £50 each, paying down 6 places based on the first 6 games. James Tidd took first place with the largest single first place payout on the Team England ranking circuit (except for the English Open), followed by Adam Purnell taking £300 which once again beats the majority of first place payouts on the circuit.

So with James Tidd leading the mens division with a worthy 1352 total, Angie Brown was leading the ladies division going into round two with 1151.

The cut saw the top 18 men and top 10 ladies bowl a further four games in round two, and they were looking to make the final round robin which saw 10 men and 6 ladies compete for 1st place in each of their divisions.

Mens tenth place going into the round robin was Richard Teece with a total of 2036 (203.6 avg), and the ladies 6th place  was Laura Marcham with a total of 1820 (182 avg).

The men faced another 9 games in the round robin, and the ladies would play 5 as has become something of a standard at England ranking events.

Jo Allsebrook started the ladies round-robin in first place but was unsure if she would be able to compete due to a nagging injury, however after game one, and a win against Angie Brown, Allsebrook found form and continued to lead the ladies and taking the 1st place position and 120 Team England ranking points. Laura Marcham was the biggest mover, qualifying in sixth spot and progressing up the table after each match to end up in second place.

In the mens division, first place was a similar story to the ladies with James Tidd remaining atop the leaderboard and taking the 120 ranking points, followed by John Wells in second place. Richard Teece made the right moves to take 5th place, up from 10th at the start of the round-robin.

The PTBC were overwhelmed by the hospitality received at AMF Peterborough, and would like to thank all of the staff that helped to make the event a huge success. We shall return...

Matchplay Doubles 2012 Top Four
The PTBC Tour's first outing of 2012 was to Charrington Bowl, Tolworth on the WTBA Atlanta 38ft Championship lane pattern.
Eleven teams bowled in the Saturday squad, with Lee Chatfield and Lee Miller leading the pack going into day two.
With weather warnings coming in, and snow falling from the Sky's over England by the end of Saturday's squad there became an increasing doubt for many as to whether the tournament would go ahead. It is testimony to the dedication of those taking part that every single team made their best effort to get to the tournament with only four teams being beaten by the appalling conditions.

Whilst some teams were delayed, the tournament got underway with just a 45 minute delay and the scores from Saturdays play were shown to be not too dissimilar from the field of Sunday.

The top 24 teams would qualify for the finals with the top four teams earning byes through to later rounds.

The 24th place cut was tight with John Wallin and Allan Meades just missing out by 4 pins, having made the journey to the bowl as they played their squad on Saturday. The venerable pairing of Lee Cocker and Cliff Dew amassed a 3014 total to become the cut and just a pin behind Junior Team England pairing Verity Crawley and Hannah Frost.

The first round of finals saw the Poole Posse go home early as Steve Thornton and Matt Chamberlain were defeated by left-handers Damian Gray and James Tidd (385-337), whilst Chris Oates and Jamie Bottomley were dismissed by the aforementioned Lee Cocker and Cliff Dew.

Final Round two saw the third and fourth seeds enter the mix, and no sooner did they arrive they were sent packing. Some high scoring from Gray/Tidd did the damage to Junior Team England's Beth Hedley and Autum Chamberlain (495-435) and JTE's Chris Lam and Elliot Crosby rid the bracket of Angie Brown and Chris West 384-362).

In the quarter finals, second seeds Lisa John and Hayley Rumkee were unable to oust the already warmed up Ash Iacona and Adam Cairns (364-398), though top seeds Richard and Ray Teece beat Adam Maher and James Footner (471-383) into the Semi Finals.

Skipping through to the final itself, a very nip and tuck affair took place with Iacona/Cairns against the Teece brothers. Going into the tenth frame there were just a few pins seperating the two teams, but a missed single pin spare from Cairns saw Ray Teece take advantage and a 6 pin win to take the doubles title (366-360).

The tournament manager would in particular like to thank all the teams and staff at the bowling centre for achieving the impossible and allowing the tournament to go ahead, almost without any detrimental effect from the treacherous weather.

Tolworth Singles 2011

Home to the 1975 World Championships, Charrington Bowl in Tolworth, Surrey played host to Englands PTBC Tour on the last weekend of July.

The PTBC’s fourth tour stop, all of which are Team England ranking events decided on a tough condition for the bowlers which saw a very low scoring tournament where only those who persevered were able to progress through qualifying to the round-robin final. Men and Ladies were split into two divisions, each playing six games in qualifying, followed by a cut to play four further games before the final cut to the top ten men and top six ladies for the round-robin.

Team England’s Matt Chamberlain (1226) led the male field after the first round, with Paul Moor (1207) in second place, the only two players to break the 200 average in the first six games. In the ladies division Northern Irelands 2007 World Cup player, Helen Tamblyn (1188) led the ladies, with Alison Taylor (1128) in second.

In round two, Chamberlain and Moor swapped positions at the top of the table, whereas in the ladies Tamblyn retained her lead, adding 794 pins to her score whilst Australia’s Cassie Staudinger made a push to the top and ended in second place adding 795 to her 1107 round one total.

The mens round-robin continued to be tough for the bowlers with no-one really able to ‘crack’ the condition. Consistent play from Dom Barrett saw him push his way up the table from fifth place in round two, and both Chamberlain and Moor dropping some places to fourth and third respectively. It was Ray Teece however who managed to take the top spot after winning six of the nine games in the final.

Despite a great effort from Tamblyn in the Ladies round-robin, she was unable to retain her lead and was passed by Staudinger who took second place. Nicki Ainge won four of the five matches along with consistent play to jump four places in the five games to win the ladies division.

Jo Cundy is English Open 2010 Champion Minimize
CundyTrophy.jpg

Long-time England international Jo Cundy won her first major event, becoming the 2010 English Open champion Sunday Nov. 21 at Lakeside Superbowl Nuneaton in Nuneaton, England.

The five-player stepladder final was an All-English affair. Cundy, who was one of three women in the stepladder (women received eight pins handicap each game), watched the first three games from the sidelines after earning the No. 1 seed position in Final Round Three. Fellow national team member Lisa John, who held the number 1 position in the qualifying and was seeded into Round Three, finished eighth.

Brunswick Euro Challenge winner Rob Thurlby edged into the fifth spot for the TV finals by bowling a 300 in the last game of Round Three to make the show. Thurlby started the stepladder by dismissing an on-form Nicki Ainge from the tournament, 220-203, and then delivering a similar blow to Europe's number one ranked player Dominic Barrett, 245-199.

t was Zara Giles, who was able to take the wind from Thurlby's sails, when he shot a low game of 178 against her in the third stepladder match, Giles taking advantage with a 246.

In the title match, Giles took on a shaky Jo Cundy, whose nerves were restricted to appearance only, as she rolled a 257 to Giles' 219 in front of the TV cameras, where Cundy lifted the English Open trophy to applause from the large crowd.

The English Open is a regular event on the European Bowling Tour, but took a break this year, electing to withdraw its EBT status. The two- hour show will air on Sky Sports 3, 9pm on 22nd December and will be repeated three times over the Christmas Period.

English Open to be broadcast on Sky Sports

The organisers of the English Open are pleased to announce some exciting changes to the 2010 edition of the European Tour Stop.

The event has grown each year, and is set to repeat the trend once again in 2010 with the news that the tournament has secured the taping of the Stepladder finals to be broadcast by Sky Sports in partnership with SGTV, over the 2010 Christmas Period. The finals will be taped in HD for a 2 hour programme to be shown on Sky Sports with a minimum of 3 repeat showings which may be increased by an unlimited amount by Sky Sports. The programme will also feature highlights and interviews from the various stages of the tournament.

The event will move from December to November, with the first qualifying squad on 17th November and finals day on 21st November.

Whilst the qualifying format will remain at 6 games, the desperado squad has been replaced with a “Turbo Xtra” option. The finals format will also see changes to allow the event to finish earlier than in previous years. Full details will be available on both the ETBF and PTBC websites in the coming days.

Lakeside Superbowl Nuneaton will set the stage for what is sure to be one of the tournament’s most exciting yet!
